Job well done!

Mr. Tldz and S. had good luck knocking out all the errands on the list (with the exception of a haircut for Mr. Tldz, but we already have someone lined up to take him for that tomorrow morning) last night after going to the MARTA hearing.  I’m impressed, as they didn’t leave the MARTA thing until almost 6:00 and the store they went to for the baby furniture closed at 7:00; but they got there, looked at the options and made a purchase.

They got a great deal, too.  A set (crib, changing table, tall chest of drawers) for half off, apparently because the color (amber) is being discontinued.  Hurrah!  From the store handout, it looks to be a very attractive color.  The way Garnbanzo’s room is painted, white furniture would probably have “matched” a little better;  but, truth be told, my preference really is for warm wood, especially for a set that we’ll hopefully be able to pass down.  (Unlike Agent Murphy’s set — that’ll teach us to try to buy at the low end of the price spectrum.)  This morning I scheduled the delivery for early afternoon tomorrow.  I can’t wait to see it!

Then they went to BRU and got all the stuff I was looking for there.  The thing they struggled with was a neutral baby outfit for photo at the hospital and/or coming home.  From what Mr. Tldz described, what they settled on was the best option.  But to me it looks to lean heavily to the boy side, and since I’ve recently started feeling pretty strongly that this Garbanzo is a girl (after going months with no sense at all of the gender) I may try to poke around on line to see if I can find another option.  But I do recall from looking myself before that truly neutral items are pretty tough to find.  There’s tons of girl stuff, a little bit of boy stuff, and “neutral” stuff that does lean a little more masculine — I guess to make up for the discrepancy between girl and boy stuff.

Mom brought me home from the hospital in a dress. Take that, sense of gender!

My mother thought it was the most hysterically funny thing that you sent ME to get baby furniture and baby items. “No offense,” she told me, “but I wouldn’t even send you to get *regular* furniture. But *baby* furniture? And baby *clothes*? And patterns on baby items?! And she lived with you. She *knows* you. You have terrible taste! That poor woman is desperate.” Okay, granted. :D

The outfit really was the most neutral thing I saw. :( I did think the little animals were cute. Even if it’s not the ultimate choice for pictures, I hope it’s still useful. I think most of the clothes were either pink with lace or primary colors with trucks or football logos or something. It rather disturbed the feminist in me (which is pretty much all of me, actually) how gendered everything was–like the *defining* characteristic of a new human being is its gender. Boo hiss.

    Funny.

The animals are cute. And if Garbanzo turns out to be Ben, we’ll definitely use the outfit. If Garbanzo is Julia, I’m not so sure. But I do know truly “neutral” is pretty hard to find for babies. It’s disappointing, but I guess almost everybody finds out what they’re having. (Of course, there are cases where people intend to find out but baby doesn’t cooperate — like what happened with Jigsawdiva’s Laser Girl.)

I did order two outfits online yesterday — one plain white embroidered thing for hospital portrait (spent more for that than I’m generally willing to on baby clothes, but maybe it will be an heirloom, and since you got such a good deal on the furniture…), and one white and yellow duck themed outfit for coming home. But it took *a lot* of digging and effort to find them, especially the white one. (At least I don’t have much else to do!) Who knew white clothing would be so hard to come by?

Thanks again for the shopping run. Looking forward to seeing the furniture later today!
