The perfect game that wasn’t

Okay, I haven’t seen video of the controversial play, but everything I’ve read and heard says the runner was clearly out at first base by like a step and a half.  If it was that obvious, why wasn’t the call appealed to another umpire with a different angle on the play?  Am I missing something?

I saw the video. He was out by 2 feet if he was out by an inch. I know that in my job we sometimes refuse to do what’s right because we have hard and fast rules and we can’t make exceptions or else everything gets questioned and nothing gets done… That doesn’t make me like it.

They play was appealed, but the ump upheld it. No other ump would have had a better angle, so it wouldn’t be appropriate to ask another ump to rule. As one manager said, the human factor is part of the game. *shrug* It happens.

I really respect the ump for quickly admitting his error as soon as he saw a replay. You could tell that he was upset for blowing the call.

I hope they don’t use this to push instant replays further into the game. Keep it human, keep giving us reasons to be upset with the umps. ;-)

I agree I don’t want to see instant replay pushed into the game. And I was impressed by the ump’s ready admission and apology, and by the graciousness of the pitcher.
